Sex, Lies and Musical Videotapes

Sex, Lies and Musical Videotapes

Music videos have been feeding on human passions almost since their inception. The visual power of the hidden and the forbidden keeps us glued to the screens and sometimes flaps authentic sensations ideal for burning rooms. Flesh sells, no doubt, but it is necessary to have style so as not fall into the vulgar. We have selected ten peculiar pieces among the thousands that have abused this issue to enjoy this curious relationship between sex and music. What would life be without both?

Suggest Instead of Showing

Evan Voytas – Tomorrow Night We’ll Go Anywhere – 2010

Let’s start with the most soft part of the list. Sensuality in its pure state. Suggest instead of showing. Kate Moss, the night and the lights of an old Mustang. Nothing else is necessary to get into the wetter dreams. Evan Voytas is a Los Angeles-based instrumentalist whose vintage romanticism music does not allow him to locate him in a scene as fiery as the LA scene. Despite this, I was surprised in 2010, after finding his song in this video that gave him some diffusion. The piece belongs to SHOWstudio, which is responsible for converting fashion films into collector’s pieces by filmmaker Mark Knight. The video was premiered at Vogue Italia.

The Most Foodie Lust

Phebre – In Decay – 2012

Gluttony and lust. Two concepts intimately linked since Classical Greece. In Decay there is a decadent feast in a Dionysian bacchanal where fruits, honey and desire intermingle with naked and sticky bodies. Dirty sensuality for idle minds. These Canadians are a paradigm of the new underground since 2012. Not overly known, Phebre stands out for fusing sophisticated electronic sounds and experimenting with a sometimes bright, sometimes dirty pop. Something they reflect in their colorful clips. His music fits very well in France, where they have great success.

You Are Not The Only One

Adanowski feat Devendra Banhart – You Are the One – 2011

A room full of pulsating bodies, beautiful women seeking the most fleeting pleasure to the rhythm of a declaration of love. This incredible visual game that parodies the lyrics of You Are The One, one of the most sensitive and most recognized themes of the great Adanowski, could not be missed in this list. Sensual and great, the son of Alejandro Jodorowski has never linked psychomagic, surrealist language or his father’s mischief as brilliantly as in this video. Looking at transvestite Devendra Banhart is another of the unparalleled moments of this audiovisual place. A video dedicated to free love, directed by SKYNNY, in 2011.

The Height Of Eroticism

Madonna – Erotica – 1992

It was inevitable to include Erotica in our walk through the art of audiovisual sex. In passing, reminds us of the Madonna of the early 90’s. The most sensual, daring and cool of all that have existed in her career. She was the Madonna of Gaultier’s conical bras, her movie Truth or Dare and her book Sex. Perhaps, the most transgressive moment of her career, being an integrator of gay minorities in a complicated moment. And suddenly, Erotica. Sophisticated sadomasochism, sexual fantasies, Naomi Campbell, the Vanilla Ice guy, all wrapped in a shocking black and white created by her book Sex’s photographer, Fabien Baron. A visual impact and an antidote against the fear of AIDS in the early 90s.

Sex In Public

Lords of Acid – I Sit On Acid – 1988 – Video recorded at the end of the 90s

What is most striking about this video is that the images were recorded live. This icon of the rave and hardcore movement in the Netherlands processed the images as a clip of this Belgian electronic band. A reference of the Thunderdome compilations and those follies of the Rotterdam of the late 80’s, 90’s and the first 2000’s. Nathalie Delaet as protagonist, an acid diva without panties masturbating, as well as guitars, distortion and synthesizers, created an indescribable sexual catharsis. The clip shows only a small part of what those concerts were, the most sexual ones that are remembered. They were active when the first hardcore wave happened in 1988. In 2003 they left orphans to their followers organized in the Children of Acid group returning in 2018 with new faces and less irreverence.

Crazy Nights

The Prodigy – Smack My Bitch Up – 1998

The Prodigy – Smack My Bitch Up – DVD edit from The Prodigy on Vimeo.

It is impossible to find a more obvious example on this list. Much more than a sex video with final surprise. The narrative of the perfect night of debauchery impacted in such a way that MTV censored the clip and even today is considered one of the most controversial videos in history. This masterpiece from 1998 was recorded by the Swedish video-filmmaker Jonas Akerlund, who has been awarded for his different works with great musical stars. None like this marvel that endowed the aesthetic rupturist reflection of one of the best records of the 90s, Fat of the Land.

The Coolest Orgy

Placebo – Protege Moi – 2004

Placebo – Protège-Moi from Cloudwhale on Vimeo.

Placebo has always been the kings of the ambiguous. Maybe there are some who think Brian Molko is a woman, because the London band always played with labels and sexual genders. No wonder that videos like this Protege-Moi played with fantasies and orgies. The controversial director Gaspar Noé showed off in 2004  this visual bombing shot with a blurred photograph that stripped bodies and passions, while provoking censorship in the music televisions. You will seldom see sex so explicit and at the same time with such good taste in a clip.

Lights of love

Peaches – Light in Places – 2015

The Canadian artist has always added a bit of naughtiness and distortion to alternative music. Without mincing words inside and outside her songs, she likes to provoke softly. She is a punch in a satin glove. All her creative personality is reflected in this visual delight directed by herself and starring the aerial artist Empress Stah. Her voice whispers, there is a light coming out of my ass. Literally. The video captures that halo in the midst of images that evoke bondage. Pure visual and sexual poetry.

Sex Is Beautiful

FKA Twigs – Papi Pacify – 2013

FKA Twigs is heir to the Jamaican sound by her father, whom she did not know until the end of her adolescence, and of the most sophisticated scenography on the part of her mother, a flamenco dancer with Spanish roots. Her humble origin is always hidden by a very refined visual and musical style, although, she also knows how to get down in the mud. She´s known for her relationship with actor Robert Pattinson. In Papi Pacify, she directs, with the help of the brilliant street photographer and director Tom Beard, this ode to sex. Shot in a simple close-up and a precious black and white screen, it captures the passion of a screw sometimes dirty, but with elegance. One of the most sensual clips you’ll ever see.

Bonus Track: Kumi Koda – KO – SO – KO -SO – 2012

We did not want to close this list without taking a look at the East. In Japan, there is a curious current that emphasizes sex in pop videos. Its most obvious exponent is Kumi Koda, a pop diva who likes to flirt with these issues in her clips and interviews. However, seeing her predecessors on the list, her lesbian duo doesn’t go beyond being a tender set design, although it’s an interesting and provocative argument in favor of tolerance in her country.

We invite you to discover these themes, without the powerful visual distraction that their videos enclose, in our Spotify list, ideal for nights with high temperature. If you remember any other video that deserves to be on the list use the #NIGHTLISTSEX hagstag on Instagran or Twitter, or write to us on our Facebook wall.
