This director, who hails from the northern part of Spain of Asturias, makes his way by shooting films. His first film, Maus, collects all the virtues of his award-winning short films and has toured the main festivals of the world. From his visit to the Fantastic Fest in Austin, he left with a mention under his arm and the desire to return to this wonderful city. We talked to him to find out and understand the magic of his movies.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MYDjNe0JJdI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Maus, his first full-length film<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Yayo<\/strong> was born in <strong>Asturias<\/strong> but he got cinematographic maturity while living in <strong>Madrid<\/strong>, at the <a href=\"http:\/\/ecam.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ECAM<\/a>. Since 2010, he has been generating a unique narrative and visual style through his trilogy of short films. He analyzes the lights and shadows of today&#8217;s society. He also analyzes intimate stories that flow from global themes. Although <strong>Yayo<\/strong> creates them without being aware of it, he finds it hard to psychoanalyze his work, but he likes that people see it that way. He likes to tell stories of the times we live.<\/p>\n<p>His concerns go beyond writing and filming his own works. In <a href=\"http:\/\/dynamite-films.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dynamite Films<\/a>, his production company, he gives opportunities to stories that do not find their place in the difficult Spanish cinema market. His debut took him to <strong>Sarajevo<\/strong> and was influenced by the book,<strong> Gorazde,<\/strong> by <strong>Joe Sacco<\/strong> to create the disturbing <strong>Picnic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Another film is <strong>Maus<\/strong>. It\u2019s the sister film of<strong> Picnic<\/strong> and that scenario develops in which the wounds of old <strong>Europe<\/strong> become scary flesh and blood. They are scars<em>\u00a0that no one talks about.\u00a0<\/em>The reaction of the<strong> Texas<\/strong> public has been divided. It\u2019s a film made for debate and there are people who love it and people who hate it. <em>That makes the cinema live and I love that.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1786\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1786\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1786\" src=\"http:\/\/www.showmoonmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Yayo-Herrero-el-camino-alternativo-del-cine-The-Maus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"642\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.showmoonmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Yayo-Herrero-el-camino-alternativo-del-cine-The-Maus.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.showmoonmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Yayo-Herrero-el-camino-alternativo-del-cine-The-Maus-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.showmoonmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Yayo-Herrero-el-camino-alternativo-del-cine-The-Maus-997x640.jpg 997w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1786\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maus frame<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This alternative proposal of good cinema has been rewarded by the presence of the Asturian director in festivals such as <strong>Sitges<\/strong> or<strong> Austin<\/strong> this past autumn with <strong>Maus<\/strong> and previously at the <strong>Goya<\/strong> or at<strong> Cannes<\/strong> through its short developers. <em>Each festival is a life experience. I can\u2019t decide on one or the other. The great taste in the mouth is always left to you for the fact that the public can see your work on a big screen. That\u2019s always a reward.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Festivals, Cinema&#8217;s Allyes<\/h2>\n<p>His international experience allows him to draw parallels between the way film is felt at festivals in the <strong>United States<\/strong> and <strong>Europe<\/strong>: <em>Americans do not look for experimentation as much as in Europe. America is always with one foot in the industry. Photo: Diario de un cineasta<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Despite this, there are always festivals that stand out. <strong>Yayo<\/strong> does not hesitate to mention which festivals have greatly impressed him: <strong>Cannes, Sitges<\/strong> and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/fantasticfest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Fantastic Fest of Austin<\/strong><\/a>. A special Jury Mention was added to the multiple awards he has won, at the Fantastica Fest in Austin last October, a city that captivated him<em>. If I could, I would put a camera anywhere.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After the festival he toured <strong>Texas<\/strong> and <strong>New Orleans<\/strong>. Right after enjoying his American adventure, we spoke to him also about the complicated situation in <strong>Europe<\/strong>, a filmaker\u2019s goals and obstacles to achieve success and about life in general. In his own words we find the person who hides behind the camera.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maus<\/strong> captivates what he shows and what is sensed after it. <em>Violence in Europe is something that goes back a long way. It is a spiral that has no end and that\u2019s just what the film talks about<\/em>. The problem arises when these alliances are not appropriate.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Cinema speaks in many different languages.\u00a0<strong> Yayo<\/strong>\u00a0already has the accent like <em>Roman Polanski, Michael\u00a0Haneke, Bela Tarr and any movie of the American cinema from the 70s.<\/em>\u00a0 <strong>Is it possible to make movies in Spain?<\/strong>\u00a0<em>It depends on what type of cinema you do. The adventure of producing is: <em>stimulating because if you write and produce you have the initiative<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The most complicated part of any production is always financing, something that <strong>Dynamite<\/strong> strives to\u00a0achieve\u00a0under the following premises. <em>The starting point is always first. Find private investors and submit calls for funds for the cinema. Reconciling artistic ambition and economy is the most difficult thing.\u00a0If you are <strong>Christopher Nolan<\/strong>, but if you want to make <strong>Bela Tarr&#8217;s<\/strong> cinema then it is more complicated<\/em>\u00a0. For this reason, the producer&#8217;s\u00a0objective\u00a0is: <em>tell stories in genre films that speak of the times we live.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On many occasions alternative cinema has to follow other paths to\u00a0achieve\u00a0funds and diffusion. Without the promotion of a great studio the festivals become the only\u00a0alid\u00a0of this underground cinema. <strong>Yayo<\/strong>\u00a0is a veteran in these games but has no recipe to succeed in them. <em>No rules. In the end everything is subjective, everything depends on the tastes of the committee.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In spite of being the great forgotten by the movie theaters and by the\u00a0general public, the <strong>short films<\/strong> find their habitat in the <strong>festivals.<\/strong> <strong>Yayo<\/strong> is clear that with a<em> political &#8211; cultural will could reach the cinemas and encourage their consumption<\/em>. Something that has not occurred at commercial level although it is true that the short film festivals have more followers every year. <em>They are a genre in itself that everyone should enjoy<\/em>. A passion that should include <strong>Picnic, The Acrobat<\/strong> and <strong>Safari,<\/strong> which analyzes the <strong>Columbine<\/strong> massacre from a revealing point of view.<\/p>\n<h2>Maus, a new road<\/h2>\n<p>This long road through the most inhospitable paths of cinema away from\u00a0conventionalisms\u00a0has taken him to\u00a0<strong>Maus<\/strong>. That hypnotic work capable of turning a thriller into an allegory of the\u00a0yagasof old <strong>Europe<\/strong>. In it, <strong>Picnic\u00a0<\/strong>is reflected.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1790\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1790\" style=\"width: 999px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1790\" src=\"http:\/\/www.showmoonmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Yayo-Herrero-el-camino-alternativo-del-cine-Maus-photo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"999\" height=\"507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.showmoonmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Yayo-Herrero-el-camino-alternativo-del-cine-Maus-photo.jpg 999w, https:\/\/www.showmoonmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Yayo-Herrero-el-camino-alternativo-del-cine-Maus-photo-300x152.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 999px) 100vw, 999px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1790\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maus<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This first short film was shot in a forest in the image and likeness of\u00a0<strong>Maus<\/strong>\u00a0and Joe\u00a0Gocco&#8217;s\u00a0book\u00a0<strong>Gorazde<\/strong>: <em>When I read it, it gave me a bad feeling, I said: this is giving me more fear than the cinema of current terror. The Picnic shoot gave him the chance go to Sarajevo and see a town only looking forward.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He has counted on <strong>August Wittgenstein, Alma\u00a0Terzic<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Ella Jazz<\/strong> for his first long film.
