Kenneth had an open mind and believed in chimeras, the integration of black musicians in the 50s and Janis Joplin in the 60s. Janis is his most universal legacy whose whisper in the middle of the night of Threadgill&#8217;s still evokes times of counterculture and rebellion . His memory is still alive thanks to the work of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eddie_Wilson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eddie Wilson<\/a>, creator of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Armadillo_World_Headquarters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Armadillo<\/a> and current owner of Threadgill&#8217;s, a mythomaniac temple that still hides countless stories. A cultural heritage threatened by the gentrification of Austin.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/i9-Wr1sVrZM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Threadgill&#8217;s, the home of music<\/h2>\n<p>On a hot summer afternoon in the mid-60s, a girl was eager to show off her talent is in a corner of <strong>Austin<\/strong> with some musician friends. A car stops and invites her to go to a special place in <strong>North Lamar<\/strong> reserved for hillbilly lovers. She accepts the invitation and they take off to the place.\u00a0 In the front seat of the car were\u00a0<strong>Jack<\/strong> and <strong>Chuck Joyce<\/strong>, musicians from a local band called <strong>Hootenanny Hoots<\/strong>. In the back seat was a smiling woman from <strong>Port Arthur, Texas<\/strong>, named <strong>Janis Joplin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>When <strong>Janis<\/strong> first entered <strong>Threadgill&#8217;s<\/strong>, she felt its magic, the smell of music and the taste of stories to tell on stage. These sensations are common to all when you enter this temple to music. But the history of this bar begins much earlier.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kenneth Threadgill<\/strong> came into this world in <strong>Peniel<\/strong>, about 50 miles from<strong> Dallas<\/strong>, in 1909. His father worked in different churches in <strong>Texas<\/strong> and <strong>New Mexico<\/strong>, which helped little<strong> Kenneth<\/strong> to learn the sounds of the <strong>South<\/strong>. As a teenager he moved to <strong>Beavumont<\/strong> where he worked as a doorman for the <strong>Loew State Theather.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One night in 1928, he met a man who changed his life, country musician <a href=\"https:\/\/wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jimmie_Rodgers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jimmie Rodgers,<\/a>\u00a0after listening to him sing <em>Waiting for a train<\/em>. The <strong>dry law<\/strong> was still in force and an extra pay was obtained by smuggling.<\/p>\n<p>His musical legacy began during a concert by <strong>Hank Williams<\/strong> at the<strong> Dessau Dance Hall in Austin<\/strong> when he took the stage before the delay of the country myth.<\/p>\n<p>Soon after, he bought the service station and coinciding with the end of the dry law, he obtained the first<strong> Texas<\/strong> license to sell alcohol. That produced a flood of people wanting to quench their thirst for liquor. In his new place he played <strong>Hillbilly\u00a0music<\/strong>\u00a0with his friends while they enjoyed a cold beer. Kenneth<\/strong> rewarded them with two rounds of free beer.\u00a0 <strong>Threadgill&#8217;s<\/strong> is integrated for the first time with black talent.\u00a0 \u00a0It\u00b4s a tolerant environment never seen before. At first, they only had a mic connected to an amplifier. It was the link, for a generation of <strong>hippies, potsmokers and lovers of progressive country<\/strong> to join <strong>white lovers of yodel and black singers<\/strong> under one roof.<\/p>\n<h2>A revolution called Janis Joplin<\/h2>\n<p>Wednesdays were <strong>Open Mic<\/strong> night. A place full of beers served by <strong>Kenneth<\/strong>\u00a0wrapped in his apron where there was no stage, backstage or any ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>The participants came from the audience and walked among the tables playing old blues\u00a0<strong>hillbilly<\/strong>\u00a0songs. One of the attendees of this unique show was going to mark the fate of the bar and American music. A <strong>hippie<\/strong> looking like she had not washed in days waited at a table.<\/p>\n<p>It was the image of the modernity of the moment. She looked a little shy without <strong>Powell Sant John<\/strong> and<strong> Lanny Wiggins <\/strong>by her side, who were part of a band called <strong>Waller Creek<\/strong>. She came to<strong> Austin<\/strong> to break free, forget her frustrations and explore her talent. She did not doubt. Microphone in hand, she\u00a0 dazzled with <em>Silver Threads and Golden Needles,<\/em> by <strong>Wanda Jackson<\/strong>. It did not matter. <strong>Kenneth<\/strong> began that night a relationship of deep friendship with her. He always claimed that Janis had not started her path to stardom in his tavern but that she had begun to make herself there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Janis<\/strong> started calling him<strong> Silver Hair Big Daddy<\/strong> because of his long white hair and his kindness. Wednesdays began to be a trend for the emotional and almost psychotropic shows of the <strong>Waller Creek<\/strong>. Her voice whispered songs by <strong>Joan Baez<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Judy Collins<\/strong> while her charisma rose beyond the roof of<strong> Threadgill&#8217;s.<\/strong> The heat of the evenings was epic. The place only had a ceiling fan until its first air conditioning in 1974.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kenneth<\/strong> admitted that <strong>Janis<\/strong> didn\u00b4t consume drugs then, although she used to drink a lot. With a drink on the table and another in the hand, she shared conversations about life and a past of rejections and broken dreams. He reminded them that he had already recorded a couple of 45 rpm that ended in nothing.<\/p>\n<p>He returned to<strong> Austin<\/strong>,\u00a0playing with his band in the main venues of the city such as the <strong>Split Rail<\/strong>\u00a0and the <strong>Checkered Flag<\/strong>, a bar run by the folkie and poet<strong> Allen Wayne Damron<\/strong>. He also toured<strong> Central Texas<\/strong> accompanied, sometimes, by<strong> Dolores and the Bonnet Boys<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>The Last Dance with Janis<\/h2>\n<p>Every year in Austin, Threadgills had a grand birthday celebration but none were like the one in 1970. Everything was prepared for a grand celebration but there was a surprise for everyone.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Janis<\/strong> appeared on stage with her feathers, smiling and happy to be reunited with her mentor. He arrived from a long trip after two performances in Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Threadgill\u00a0<\/strong>brought her a gift from<strong> Hawaii<\/strong> and<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>he\u00a0gave<span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">\u00a0the best versions of <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 15px;\">Jimmie Rodgers<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"> saying goodbye as they do loved ones, until next time. After the death of <strong>Janis, Kris Kristofferson<\/strong> listened to him at the <strong>Dripping Springs Reunion<\/strong>. This peculiar festival was known as<em> the Woodstock of the Country,<\/em> an initiative of diverse artists and four businessmen from<strong> Dallas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u00b4s considered the definitive takeoff of <strong>progressive country<\/strong> and of<strong> Austin<\/strong> as an emerging musical scene. The promo of the festival was taken almost in secret and only 3,000 or 4,000 people were lucky enough to live it. After this mysterious festival, <strong>Kristofferson<\/strong> decided to take him to <strong>Nashville<\/strong> to record with the blessing of <strong>Willie Nelson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>A Forgotten Album<\/h2>\n<p>In <strong>Nashville, Janis&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>promise was beginning to be fulfilled.<strong> Kristofferson<\/strong> had achieved a team consisting of <strong>Johnny Gimble, Kris Kristofferson <\/strong>himself and<strong> Waylon Jennings<\/strong>. The session gave birth to a master recording with the best of <strong>Kenneth Threadgill&#8217;s<\/strong> repertoire. This was a collector piece that was passed down from hand to hand for years. No label wanted to give this recording a commercial outlet. The fire chief evicted <strong>Threadgill&#8217;s<\/strong> several times due to excessive capacity. However, 1974 was a sad year for<strong> Kenneth Threadgill.<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Austin American Statesman<\/a> newspaper, a neighbor of <strong>Showmoon,<\/strong> unveiled a series of acts of vandalism on the premises.<\/p>\n<p>The news echoed the intention of the<strong> Building Standard Commission<\/strong> to demolish the old<strong> Threadgill&#8217;s<\/strong> for its decadent state. <strong>Kenneth<\/strong> began to have in mind a possible sale of the land but no one was interested at that time for the building. That is to say, he was one of the first university students to discover the musical universe of <strong>Threadgill&#8217;s.<\/strong> He soon understood the transcendence of the <strong>Austin<\/strong> music scene. As with <strong>Kenneth<\/strong>, the environment created by <strong>Eddie<\/strong> and his team encompassed all kinds of social stereotypes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eddiie<\/strong>\u00a0still runs both places since &#8217;74. On December 30, 1981, he transformed the old<strong> Threadgill&#8217;s<\/strong> into a restaurant following the steps of his mother&#8217;s home cooking, his great foodie reference. A succulent binge of unique sensations.<\/p>\n<h2>From Janis&#8217;s Whisper to the Noise of Gentrification<\/h2>\n<p>Its home cooking has been an<strong> Austin<\/strong> landmark for years with its fabulous<strong> Texas steaks, sirloins, burgers and a huge variety of fried chicken and entrees<\/strong>. The dream that began at a gas station and that of a whisper of <strong>Janis Joplin<\/strong> immortalized, has survived all kinds of circumstances.
